Friberg Castle (Ruin) (Trun)

The ruin of Friberg Castle is located in the municipality of Trun in the Swiss canton of Graubünden.

The few ruins of the former Friberg Castle are situated on a moraine hill directly on the road from Trun to Schlans on the west side of the gorge.

Apart from the remains of a considerable cistern on the northern edge of the terrain, practically nothing of the castle has been preserved. The foundations of a strong tower at the highest point, measuring 10 by 11 meters, can only be vaguely discerned. A mighty wall tooth of the north wall, which rose to a height of five stories, collapsed on November 16, 1911; the stump that Clavadetscher still mentioned is no longer recognizable. Isolated wall remains in the saddle of the foreland were removed during the construction of the road.

Whether Friberg Castle in Trun is connected to Friberg Castle in Siat is conceivable but not proven; written documents about the origin and history of the castle are missing. It is conceivable that Friberg was built by Distentiser bailiffs. In 1249, the administrator Antonius of Carnisio is said to have handed over or sold the monastic castle to his brother Lanfrancus.

Disputes over the castle arose between the monastery and the bailiff Hugo von Werdenberg, who had to return the castle to the monastery in 1327. In a judgment in 1469, the "gutt genantt Fryberg in Trunser kilchspell" (parish) appeared, concerning a water pipeline. It is unclear whether it referred to a farm or the castle. When the castle was abandoned is not proven.
