Ebersburg Castle (Ruin)

Ebersburg Castle is a castle ruin in the Ebersberg district of the municipality of Ebersburg in the Fulda district of East Hesse. The castle is located at the foot of the Wasserkuppe on the Ebersberg and is considered one of the most beautiful ruins in the Rhön.

The castle complex was built around 1100 by the Lords of Ebersberg and first mentioned in a document in 1219 as the ancestral seat of the Knights of Ebersberg.

In 1270, it was destroyed on behalf of Fulda Abbot Bertho II von Leibolz, as it had become a robber baron's nest. Only in 1396 did Prince-Abbot Johann I von Merlau permit its reconstruction.

After several changes of ownership, the castle was last made habitable in 1664, but then fell into disrepair. It fell to Bavaria in 1803 and to Prussia in 1867. In 1963/1994, the state of Hesse initiated the restoration of the ruin. In the possession of the state of Hesse, the castle is managed by the Hofbieber Hessenforst forest office. The key for the castle tower can be obtained against a deposit at the Berggasthof zur Ebersburg, located below. Due to the castle's island location on the Ebersberg, visitors are offered a magnificent panoramic view of and into the Rhön.
