Chameregg Castle (Ruin)

The Chameregg castle ruin is the remnant of a medieval hilltop castle in Chameregg, today a district of the Upper Palatinate district town of Cham in East Bavaria. It is the oldest masonry in the region.

In 1322, the Chamerauer family was listed as owners of the castle, and in the 15th century, the influential Pollinger family was named as lords. With further changes of ownership, the structural decline of the complex also began. When the castle was destroyed is not known, but a fire disaster has been proven. Its temporal placement in the Hussite Wars is pure speculation.

The Chameregg castle ruin has been owned by the Bayerischer Wald-Verein since 1900.

In the years 1965/66 and 1987 to 1989, excavations and safeguarding measures were carried out with considerable financial effort. The stump of the former keep (Ödenturm) still rises 22 meters high. The walls have a thickness of up to three meters. At least four floors can be identified. Furthermore, parts of the curtain wall and the moat are still recognizable.

Ashlar stones from the castle are said to have been used for the construction of private houses in the neighboring Chammünster.
