Dongio Castle (Ruin)

The remains of the Castle can be visited

The Castello Dongio ruin is a fascinating castle complex in the Swiss canton of Ticino, picturesquely nestled into a natural grotto. As part of a group of mysterious defensive structures in the Blenio Valley, it bears witness to a turbulent past and today offers a unique insight into high medieval architecture and way of life.

History+

Research has identified the so-called “Case dei Pagani” in the Blenio Valley, which includes Castello Dongio, as small castle complexes built in the High Middle Ages, presumably between the 11th and 13th centuries, by local noble families. In times of war, these difficult-to-access places also served as refuges for the rural population. Castello Dongio was abandoned in the 15th century. Despite the lack of written records, conclusions about its former importance can be drawn from the preserved building structures.

Location+

The Castello Dongio ruin is located in Dongio in the Blenio district in the canton of Ticino, Switzerland, at an altitude of approximately 587 meters above sea level.

On site+

Visitors can explore the Castello Dongio ruin today. The remains of the complex are integrated into a natural grotto. The residential wing, an elongated, two-part building, is still preserved up to a height of three stories and shows window openings and a latrine niche. Access to the building is via an elevated door, which is reached by a staircase made of stone slabs.
