The ruin of Castello di Pontegana in Balerna, a historic castle complex, stands on an elevated position in the Swiss canton of Ticino. Its remains bear witness to a turbulent past and today offer a fascinating insight into medieval architecture and way of life.

History+

The Castello di Pontegana was first documented around the year 789, when it was owned by the Lombard Ragiperto. In 1124, the castle, which at that time was under episcopal rule, became the target of the Milanese. They besieged the complex and eventually captured it through betrayal. It is presumed that the castle was subsequently destroyed and then rebuilt, which is indicated by the oldest parts of the main tower. The family of Pontegana was documented as a bishop's vassal between the late 12th and early 15th centuries. Written sources do not allow for a precise statement on the duration of its habitation, but the preserved building remains suggest use until the 14th century. Around 1350, Bishop Bonifazio is said to have initiated major alterations, which would explain the late medieval loopholes in the younger curtain wall. The castle appears to have been inhabited until the early 15th century and likely met its demise during the regional conflicts of that period.
