Brunneck Castle (Ruin) (Altdorf)
Brunneck Castle is today only a ruin of a former late medieval noble castle west of Altdorf, a district of the municipality of Titting, in the Upper Bavarian district of Eichstätt in Bavaria. The castle ruin of the spur castle is freely accessible at all times. It is located in the Altmühltal Nature Park on an eastward-facing, three-sided steeply sloping mountain spur of the Brunnenberg above the Anlauter valley.
Built at the end of the 14th century by the Lords of Heideck, the "Veste Prunnekke" with its rights and together with the people and goods in Irfersdorf, Erkertshofen, Schafhausen and Wachenzell was sold in 1413 by Johann II von Heideck to the Prince-Bishopric of Eichstätt and, after 1423, under Prince-Bishop Friedrich IV von Oettingen, expanded into an Eichstätt-princely-episcopal administrative castle. In 1525, the castle was occupied and plundered by the Mässing peasant mob during the German Peasants' War. In 1544, the Prince-Bishopric united Brunneck with the administrative district in Titting. In 1602, a castle chapel dedicated to Saint Alexius is mentioned. In the 17th century, the castle was only the residence of the episcopal foresters. After 1691, it fell into disrepair.
Description+
Of the former castle complex, only the remains of two wall sections of the approximately trapezoidal complex are preserved. In the west, a deep neck ditch separates the castle site from the hinterland. The surrounding wall behind it is reinforced like a shield wall and is still preserved at a height of about seven meters. In the north, the wall ends in a semicircular, tower-like projection.
In the southwest, the wall continues at a right angle to the edge of the slope. In the middle of the wall section, a renovated gate opening allows access to the interior of the castle.
