Brandis Castle (Ruin) (Lützelflüh)

The ruin of Brandis Castle dates from the 13th century. It stands in the Swiss municipality of Lützelflüh in the canton of Bern above the village of Lützelflüh on a rocky outcrop. Today, remnants of walls and the neck ditch are still visible.

Brandis Castle was the ancestral seat of the Barons of Brandis from 1230. From here, they administered their possessions in the upper and middle Emmental in the 13th century. In 1337, the Brandis family received Bernese citizenship rights. In 1455, the family sold the lordship to the Lords of Scharnachthal. Thereafter, there were several changes of ownership until the castle came into the possession of the city of Bern in 1607 and became a Bernese bailiwick. During the French invasion in 1798, the castle burned down to its foundations.
