Belfort Belfort

The origins of Belfort Castle date back to around 1200, although it was first documented in 1222 as property of the Barons of Vaz. This family moved their main residence here in the 13th century but retained their ancestral name. The ambitious policies of the Vaz family led to numerous conflicts in which Belfort played a central role. After the death of the last Vaz, Donat, in 1337, the castle passed to the Counts of Toggenburg through his daughter Kunigunde. Following the extinction of the Toggenburg family in 1436, Belfort changed hands several times, including Wilhelm von Montfort-Tettnang and Heinrich von Sax-Misox. From 1441, the Beeli of Davos served as bailiffs at the castle. Its ultimate fate was sealed by the Swabian War: On March 14, 1499, the castle was burned down by the people of Graubünden to render it unusable as an Austrian stronghold.

The ruin of Belfort is located in the municipality of Surava in the Albula district of the canton of Graubünden, Switzerland. It is situated at an altitude of approximately 1155 m above sea level.

The ruin of Belfort is now accessible to visitors and can be explored. Extensive restoration work between 2002 and 2007 secured the complex and facilitated access through the installation of metal stairs.
