Altjochenstein Castle (Ruin)

The remains of the Castle can be visited

The Altjochenstein ruin is a castle ruin near Jochenstein high above the Danube valley on the German-Austrian border in the municipality of Untergriesbach in the district of Passau.

The knightly family of the Jokensteiners is mentioned in the 13th century but died out in the 14th century. Their property fell to the Prince-Bishopric of Passau. The spur castle fell into disrepair.

The 12th-century complex presumably formed a coherent complex with the neighboring Neujochenstein castle ruin. Remains of the residential tower and a cellar vault as well as the moats can still be recognized. The structure, built from unhewn rubble stones joined with mortar, reaches a height of eight meters on a base area of 9 by 13 meters. The ruin is accessible.
