Alt-Ramschwag Castle (Ruin) (Häggenschwil)

Of the ancestral castle of the Lords of Ramschwag, built shortly after 1200, only the ruins with tower remnants, residential and economic buildings, and a ring wall with a gate system remain today. The location of the castle ruins was carefully chosen: In the north and west, it is protected by the stream gorge and the Sitter river, and in the east by three moats.

Later, Alt-Ramschwag came into the possession of Rudolf von Rosenberg through marriage, who finally sold the castle in 1427 to Ulrich and Burkard von Helmsdorf (South German nobles). However, the complex remained in their possession only until 1490: At that time, Ramschwag was abandoned because the southern part of the fortress collapsed into the Sitter river. The farmer Hans Rudolf Koller became the new and last private owner of the ruin and removed all the woodwork for sale.

As early as 1932, Ramschwag was secured by the Swiss Castles Association.
