Alt-Laubenberg Castle (Ruin)

Alt-Laubenberg Castle, also known as Laubenberg or Laubenburg, is a castle ruin on a hill approximately 1000 meters south of the Swabian municipality of Grünenbach in the Lindau district of Bavaria.

The hilltop castle was presumably built as the ancestral seat by the Lords of Laubenberg, who were vassals of the Prince-Bishopric of Augsburg, at the beginning of the 12th century, and indirectly mentioned in 1165 with Erpus von Laubenberg and in 1268 with Konrad von Laubenberg. The Lords of Laubenberg also served as ministeriales of the Augsburg bishops at Laubenbergerstein Castle and as feudal lords of the Counts of Montfort at Rauhlaubenberg Castle. The line of the Lords of Laubenberg at Laubenstein died out in 1442; their heirs were the Laubenberg von Laubenberg-Stein line.

After the destruction of Alt-Laubenberg Castle in 1468 and its reconstruction in 1469, the castle was destroyed by rebels in the German Peasants' War in 1525. In 1636, this line of the Laubenbergers also died out; the heirs were the Barons Pappus von Trazberg.

Alt-Laubenberg Castle burned down in 1719 after a lightning strike and was subsequently not rebuilt. In 1801, stones from the ruin were quarried for the burned-down Tavern inn in nearby Schönau. In 1806, the castle ruin came into the possession of Bavaria, and in 1892, it passed to the Barons von Nostitz.

Remains of the former castle complex are still preserved.
