Adelburg Castle (Ruin)

The castle ruin Adelburg, also called Adelnburg, is the remnant of a former high medieval noble castle in the municipality of Seubersdorf in the Upper Palatinate district of Neumarkt in the Upper Palatinate, Bavaria. The Adelburg castle ruin is located about 1.3 kilometers northeast of Eichenhofen, a northeastern district of Seubersdorf, on the wooded summit of the high, island-like Kellerberg. To the northwest below lies Velburg-Hollerstetten, to the north the confluence of the small Frauenbach into the Schwarze Laber, and to the east Parsberg-Klapfenberg.

The ruin can be reached from the federal highway 3, which runs east of the Kellerberg. The summit of the Kellerberg can only be reached by hiking trails from the surrounding villages. Other castles and ruins nearby include the castle in Parsberg and Lupburg Castle, Velburg Castle Ruin, and Helfenberg Ruin.

The hilltop castle was built in the 12th century by the Lords of Adelburg and was an imperial fief of the Staufer dynasty. In 1180, it was mentioned as de Adelenburg. In 1246, it reverted to the Empire and subsequently became a frequent object of trade and exchange. Other castle owners included the Wittelsbachers and the Lords of Parsberg. From 1413 to 1584, the complex was destroyed several times.

The three-part complex consisted of a core castle and two outer bailey. Its five-meter-high and 1.45-meter-thick curtain wall made of the ashlar blocks common in the 12th century is still partially preserved. According to a legend, an underground tunnel is said to lead from Klapfenberg under the Schwarze Laber to Adelburg Castle.
