Rothschild Castle

The castle's origins date back to the first half of the 13th century, when a medieval castle with a core from that period was built. For centuries, it served as the seat of the Freising administrators. A significant era began in 1875 when Albert Salomon Anselm von Rothschild acquired the castle, making it the administrative headquarters for his extensive estates. Under his patronage and with the involvement of Vienna Cathedral architect Friedrich von Schmidt, a comprehensive Neo-Gothic renovation took place. In 2007, following a fundamental renovation where architect Hans Hollein introduced new architectural elements, the castle became a venue for the Lower Austrian Provincial Exhibition. Today, it houses the “5e-Museum,” dedicated to the city's history.

The castle is situated in Waidhofen an der Ybbs, in southwestern Lower Austria, Austria, on a conglomerate rock approximately 355 meters above sea level. It lies at the confluence of the Ybbs and Schwarzbach rivers, forming the apex of a triangle that encloses the historic, formerly fortified city center of Waidhofen an der Ybbs.

Today, visitors to Rothschild Castle will find a versatile venue. It serves as a location for cultural events and houses a museum that brings the history of Waidhofen an der Ybbs to life. The building has been extensively renovated and is accessible to the public.
