Rosary Basilica

Parish church, Cathedral

The Rosary Basilica in Berlin is a remarkable example of Neo-Romanesque sacred architecture. As the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Berlin and a listed building, it is dedicated to the Virgin Mary of the Rosary and stands as a significant house of worship in the German capital.

History+

The foundation stone of the Rosary Basilica was laid in 1900. The church emerged as the fourteenth Catholic church in what would become Greater Berlin after the Reformation. As early as 1882, regular masses were held in a dance hall in Steglitz, leading to the development of a first chapel, a rectory, and a Catholic school by 1885. The community was elevated to a curacy in 1891 and a parish in 1894. The construction was significantly driven by the first pastor Josef Deitmer, who was instrumental in securing financing and purchasing the land. Before World War I, three daughter parishes emerged from the Rosary community. After 1945, the church served as an interim cathedral until the reconstruction of St. Hedwig's Cathedral and was elevated to a Basilica minor by Pope Pius XII in 1950. In 2023, the parish merged with St. Benedict to form the current parish of Maria Rosenkranzkoenigin – Steglitz-Lankwitz-Dahlem, with the Rosary Basilica as its parish church.
