Roman Gate Carnuntum
The Roman Gate of Carnuntum, also known as the Heidentor, is an impressive late antique victory monument from the 4th century AD. It is located in Petronell-Carnuntum, Lower Austria, in the immediate vicinity of the once significant Roman legionary camp of Carnuntum. Despite its partial destruction, the ruin still bears witness to its former grandeur and is one of the best-preserved structures of the ancient metropolis.
History+
The monument was erected in the 4th century AD, probably in the 350s under Emperor Constantius II. It served as a victory monument, intended to symbolize the power and invincibility of Rome during a period of great upheaval. The name "Heidentor" (Heathen Gate) originated in the Middle Ages, when Roman structures were attributed to paganism, and it was mistakenly believed to be the tomb of a giant. Over the centuries, the structure suffered considerable damage due to stone robbery and an explosion. Between 1998 and 2001, it underwent extensive archaeological investigation, restoration, and conservation.
