Only discovered in 1996, it now offers visitors the opportunity to delve into the history of the ancient colony of Iulia Equestris and explore the well-preserved remains of a once vibrant cultural center.
History+
The Roman colony of Iulia Equestris, whose territory stretched between the Jura, the Rhone, and Lake Geneva, was probably founded by Julius Caesar between 46 and 44 BC. Its aim was to secure the southern exit of the Swiss Plateau and the trade routes to Italy. The first settlers were veterans, mainly cavalrymen. Under Emperor Augustus, the colony experienced a boom, and a monumental center with a forum and a basilica was built. The amphitheater, discovered in 1996, whose arena measured approximately 50 by 36 meters, probably dates from the early 2nd century AD. In the 3rd century AD, the city was severely damaged as a result of Alemannic invasions, but the settlement of Nyon continued.
