In the Franche-Comté region of France, near the municipality of Mandeure, lie the impressive remains of the Roman Theater of Epomanduodurum. This structure bears witness to the former supra-regional importance of the Roman settlement and is one of the largest Gallo-Roman amphitheaters preserved to this day.

History+

Present-day Mandeure was known as Epomanduodurum in Roman times, though the exact origin of this name, whether Celtic or Roman, remains unclear. The city developed into a center of far-reaching significance. Besides the monumental theater, considered one of the largest of its kind in Gaul, excavations have also uncovered the foundations of Roman baths and residential houses, giving an idea of life in this ancient metropolis.

The ancient site is situated in Mandeure, in the Doubs department, within the Franche-Comté region of France. It lies at an elevation of approximately 333 meters above sea level.
