Roman Castle Pone Navata

The Roman fort Pone Navata, also known as Visegrád-Sibrik fort, was a significant late antique border fortification on the Pannonian Limes. It is located on the Sibrik Hill near Visegrád in Hungary and served to monitor a strategically important section of the Danube, which once formed the Roman imperial border.
History+
The complex was built in the 4th century on the trapezoidal plateau of Sibrik Hill. Its irregular shape adapted to the topography. The fortification featured a wall thickness of 1.1 to 1.2 meters, complemented by horseshoe-shaped side towers and fan-shaped corner towers. Archaeological finds, including coins, suggest a foundation in the 320s, although newer research does not rule out an origin in the 350s or 360s. After the death of Emperor Valentinian I around 375, the fort was possibly abandoned and its garrison relocated. A later powerful square burgus, erected at the site of the former gate, remained in use until the province was abandoned. Roman wall remains and a medievally repaired tower bear witness to the long use of the site. Slavic settlers gave the fort the name Visegrád, meaning “High Castle,” in the 9th century.
