Roman Fortress Karasura

The settlement of Karasura began as early as the Neolithic period around 5000 BC and reached its peak in the Bronze Age. The favorable location with fertile soils and abundant water attracted people early on. Over time, a 19-meter-high settlement mound called Kaleto emerged. In Roman times, Karasura was an important way station on the Via Militaris, connecting Constantinople with other major cities in the Balkans. Numerous Roman sanctuaries and its mention in ancient travel guides attest to its significance. From the 4th to the 6th century AD, Karasura may even have been a bishop's seat. Invasions by Goths, Avars, and Slavs led to the destruction of the fortress at the end of the 6th century. Afterwards, Armenians and Slavo-Bulgarians settled here. The settlement existed with interruptions for almost 6000 years until the 13th century, marked by destruction and reconstruction due to its strategic location.

The Roman fort of Karasura is situated at an elevation of approx. 206 m above sea level, near the village of Rupkite in the Chirpan district, Stara Zagora region, Bulgaria.

The impressive remains of the Roman fort of Karasura are now accessible to visitors. Archaeological excavations have uncovered fortress walls, towers, bastions, and gates, providing a good insight into the original layout of the complex. Foundations of three medieval churches and an early Christian basilica have also been discovered. Numerous finds, including coins and ceramics, bear witness to the long and eventful history of the site.
