Roman Fort Isca Silurum
The Roman fort of Isca Silurum, also known as Isca Augusta, was a significant Roman legionary fortress on the British Isle. Located in southwest Wales, near modern-day Caerleon, it served as a strategic base at the mouth of the River Usk.
History+
From approximately 74/75 AD, Isca Silurum became the home of Legio II Augusta. Prior to its construction, the site was likely uninhabited. The fort's history can be divided into three construction phases: an initial timber and earth phase from 74/75 to 122 AD, followed by two more phases until 293 AD. Although coin finds dating up to 370 suggest some civilian presence, the military use of the camp ended in the 3rd century. Significant excavations in the 20th century, notably by Sir Mortimer Wheeler and Victor Nash-Williams, uncovered numerous structures such as barrack blocks, baths, and the amphitheater.
