Roman Castle Cannabiaca

While the exact identification of Zeiselmauer fort with ancient Cannabiaca is not entirely without doubt, it is considered highly probable due to its location on the eastern border of the former province of Noricum and archaeological finds. It served as an auxiliary fort, garrisoned alternately by infantry and cavalry units. Cannabiaca was part of a security belt for the chain of forts in Upper Pannonia and protected the eastern flank of the neighboring fort Comagena/Tulln. Archaeological investigations, particularly by the Austrian Federal Monuments Office, have significantly expanded knowledge about Roman Zeiselmauer in recent decades. The oldest finds date back to the 1st century, and several construction phases and destruction horizons have been documented, including a major fire horizon in the 5th century. A votive altar dedicated by the Cohors II Thracum was found, as were indications of the Principia, the fort's main building.

The Roman fort Cannabiaca is located in Zeiselmauer-Wolfpassing in the Tulln district, Lower Austria, Austria, at an elevation of approximately 173 m above sea level.

The impressive remains of the Roman fort are accessible to visitors today. Particularly noteworthy are the Burgus, the Körnerkasten (granary), and the fan-shaped towers, which are unique along the Danube Limes due to their excellent state of preservation and vividly demonstrate the long Roman history of the site.
