Roman Castle Augustianis
The Roman fort of Augustianis in Traismauer, Lower Austria, was a significant part of the Roman Danube Limes. This ancient fortification, located beneath the present-day old town of Traismauer, bears witness to the Roman presence in the region and is an important testament to Roman military architecture.
History+
The Augustianis fort, likely occupied by Roman troops from the 1st to the 5th century, served as a cavalry camp. Its name probably derives from the ala I Augusta Thracum cavalry unit stationed here, whose presence is attested by inscriptions and brick stamps. Although it was often equated with the station Trigisamum until 1949, Theodor Mommsen had already argued for the name Augustianis in the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum. Significant remains of the late antique fort are still preserved in medieval fortifications and in the crypt of St. Ruprecht's Church.

The Augustianis fort is located in Traismauer, in the district of St. Pölten Land in Lower Austria, Austria, at an elevation of approximately 210 m above sea level. The complex lies on the southwestern edge of the Tulln Basin, directly at the exit of the Traisen Valley.
