Roman Castle Abritus

The origins of Abrittus date back to a Thracian settlement from the 4th to 1st century BC. In 45 AD, the region became part of the Roman province of Moesia. By 78 AD at the latest, Roman auxiliary troops were stationed here, and in the 2nd century, it served as a permanent camp. Abrittus gained fame from the battle in 251 AD, where Emperor Decius fell in battle against the Goths. In the 4th century, the fortifications were strengthened under Emperor Constantine the Great. After the military withdrew, the fort developed into a fortified civilian city. Although it was destroyed and rebuilt several times, it reached a considerable size of 300 hectares and became an ecclesiastical center. In 585 AD, it was severely damaged by Avars and Slavs and subsequently abandoned. Later, from the end of the 9th to the beginning of the 10th century, Bulgarians occupied the ruins and refortified them, before this fortress was burned down by the Pechenegs in the 11th century.

The Roman fort of Abrittus is located near the city of Razgrad in the Razgrad district, in the Razgrad region of Bulgaria. The site is situated at an elevation of approximately 224 meters above sea level.
