Roman Watchtower Weiach

After the Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes was abandoned in the 3rd century AD, the Roman Empire needed a new defense concept for its northwestern borders. Around 260 AD, Roman troops withdrew to more easily defensible rivers such as the Rhine, Danube, and Iller. From about 285 AD, the construction of numerous castella and watchtowers began along this new border, including the Weiach Watchtower. This comprehensive fortification program is attributed either to Emperor Probus (276-282) or, more likely, to Diocletian (284-305) and his co-emperors. The watchtowers were placed within sight of each other between the castella and served for border surveillance and rapid alarm in case of attack. In the 4th century AD, the Roman Empire was able to successfully defend against Germanic incursions thanks to these fortifications. Emperor Valentinian I (364-375) initiated another extensive fortification program around 370 AD, which likely included the Weiach Watchtower. Even after the withdrawal of Roman troops in the early 5th century and the collapse of the Rhine border around 406/407, the fortifications remained partially in use, defended by federated Burgundians. It was only after 450 that the decline of Roman rule north of the Alps accelerated.

The Roman Watchtower Weiach is situated in the municipality of Weiach, which belongs to the Dielsdorf district in the canton of Zurich, Switzerland. Its position at approximately 363 m above sea level offered a strategically advantageous view.
