Roman Castle Verőcemaros-Dunamező

The small fortification, also known as Nógrádverőce or Verőce, was built in the Barbaricum on the north bank of the Danube. Opposite it, on Szentendrei Island, was another burgus or landing site. The complex allowed for the monitoring of the dense chain of watchtowers on the south bank of the Danube and the relaying of alarms. As a bridgehead at the apex of the Danube bend, it could outflank attackers attempting to break through the Limes Sarmatiae wall system. Excavations by István Paulovics in 1934 uncovered a rectangular central building measuring 18 x 23 meters, which served as a residential and watchtower. It had walls 2.8 meters thick on foundations 3.2 meters wide and was constructed from stone and bricks. Two centrally placed brick pillar foundations supported the multi-story structure with a heavy tiled roof. Originally, the complex had two walls, each about 14 meters long and two meters thick, extending at right angles from the central building, with square towers of 5 x 5 meters at their ends. These formed a quadrangle open towards the Danube, enclosing a landing zone for ships. Paulovics suggested that the side towers and wing walls were demolished and leveled during Roman times, leaving the central building as a solitary burgus. This modification may have occurred around 380 AD. The Danube-facing zone was destroyed by the river after the Romans withdrew. Numerous small finds, including a rare glass bottle, worked iron, and pottery, indicate occupation until the 5th century. Roof tiles stamped with the names of high-ranking officers such as Frigeridus dux and tribunes Lupicinus, Terentianus, Olimpus, and Caris allow for a dating to the time of Emperor Constantius II (337–360) or Valentinian I (364–375). Post-Roman graves and finds such as amber and a Germanic pot indicate settlement by Germanic peoples after the Roman era.

The Roman Burgus Verőcemaros-Dunamező is located in Verőce, Pest County, in the Central Hungary region, Hungary. The complex is situated at an elevation of approx. 99 m above sea level.

The remains of the Roman fort can be visited today, offering an insight into the Roman border defense along the Danube Limes.
