Roman Aqueduct to Nîmes-Pont du Gard
The Roman Aqueduct to Nîmes-Pont du Gard is an impressive ancient structure in Southern France. As part of an extensive water supply system, it once provided the Roman city of Nemausus (today Nîmes) with fresh water and is now one of the best-preserved Roman aqueducts.
History+
For a long time, it was believed that the aqueduct was built around 19 BC. However, recent archaeological findings suggest its construction in the middle of the 1st century AD. Its main task was to cross the Gardon Valley to transport water from the springs near Uzès to Nîmes. After its completion, approximately 20,000 cubic meters of water flowed through the pipeline daily. From the 4th century onwards, maintenance was neglected, leading to its complete disuse by the 9th century. In the Middle Ages and up to the 18th century, the Pont du Gard served as a road bridge, with even adjustments made to its piers. A new road bridge was built next to it in 1747 to relieve the Roman structure. Since 1985, the aqueduct has been a UNESCO World Heritage site.
