Roman Villa Rustica Hartberg
The Villa Rustica in Löffelbach near Hartberg shows the well-preserved foundations of a large Roman country estate (palatial peristyle villa with colonnade) from the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD.
At the center of the villa was an inner courtyard (peristyle) surrounded on all sides by colonnades. The living quarters adjoin this. To the west is a comfortable bathing facility. To the north is a large, 40 m long reception hall with an apse. In this "aula", the lord of the manor received the small farmers and tenants for whom he was responsible in terms of justice and security.
As early as 1700, a Roman burial mound was removed during the construction of a house south of the Villa Rustica. Two Roman grave lions were found, one of which is displayed in the city park of Hartberg. According to observations by the landowners, the foundations of the Villa Rustica in Löffelbach were excavated and conserved between 1961 and 1963 under the direction of Walter Modrijan. The foundations were restored between 1992 and 2002.
