Roman Villa Nennig

The villa was founded in the 1st century AD, and its use extended into the second half of the 4th century. Its discovery occurred by chance in 1852, followed by initial excavations until 1872. More recent systematic investigations between 1987 and 1999 revealed it to be an axial courtyard villa, comprising a representative living area (Pars urbana) and an economic area (Pars rustica). The latter featured paved roads leading from the Moselle to the manor house, as well as various utility and residential buildings. The living area included a 120-meter-wide manor house with a portico facade, two side wings, an almost 500-square-meter bathhouse, and a 260-meter-long garden portico. A burial mound with a reconstructed ring wall is also located on the site. The famous mosaic in the reception hall, depicting amphitheater scenes, dates from the 3rd century AD. After the Roman era, Franks inhabited the decaying Roman structures until the villa was finally destroyed in 882 during the Norman raids.

The Roman Villa Nennig is situated at an elevation of approximately 151 meters above sea level in Nennig, in the Merzig-Wadern district, Saarland, Germany.

The remains of the Roman villa, particularly the impressive mosaic in the reception hall, are accessible to visitors. A 19th-century protective structure preserves the mosaic, and the foundation walls of parts of the manor house, including column stumps of a peristyle, can also be viewed.
