Roman Villa Höflein

Already in Roman times, the region around Carnuntum was extensively used for agriculture. The soldiers stationed on the Danube and the population living in the city required considerable amounts of food. In the course of cultivating the land, numerous estates were established. Two such estates are known in the municipality of Höflein. An ancient European trade route, the Amber Road, which crossed the Danube near Carnuntum, was expanded into a main traffic route to the south during Roman times. To better secure this road militarily, a small fort was built on the prominent hill of the Kirchenberg of Höflein. This fort was proven during the first archaeological investigations in Höflein around the turn of the century. The cemetery wall follows the course of this Roman wall and gives an impression of the size and location of the fort. The spolia - reused Roman stone material - in the wall also point to the Roman history. Some of them even bear inscriptions.

Since 1990, the municipality of Höflein has been carrying out an archaeological project. Old finds are being processed and new scientific excavations are being carried out. The Roman past of the place is to be made visible to visitors. A Roman villa - an estate in Aubüheln - was newly discovered as part of the archaeological project. The villa, whose heating system is still excellently preserved, probably dates from the 4th century AD.
