Roman Villa Eigeltingen

The villa rustica of Eigeltingen was discovered as early as 1859 during road construction work northeast of the village. Dr. Aufdermauer and Dr. Stather conducted the first scientific trial excavations in 1988. They showed that the walls of the main house were still preserved several meters high in parts of the rubble mounds. In contrast, only a few layers of stone remain from the outbuildings located in the agricultural area. To document the outbuildings before their final destruction, the walls of an economic building were fully archaeologically investigated in 2001 and 2002 by district archaeologist Jürgen Hald and the State Monuments Office of Baden-Württemberg, with the help of interested laypersons. The Roman estate was probably founded in the 2nd century AD and existed until the end of Roman rule in the Hegau.
