Roman Villa Armira
The Roman Villa Armira, an impressive ancient complex, is located in the Haskovo region of Bulgaria, near the town of Ivaylovgrad. It is considered one of the most outstanding Roman country houses in the former province of Thrace and is particularly known for its elaborate floor mosaics, which are among the largest of their kind in Bulgaria.
History+
Villa Armira was built in the second half of the 1st century AD, shortly after Thrace was declared a Roman province. It originally served as a residence for a Thracian nobleman in Roman service. In the 2nd century, a workshop for artistic works and marble processing was established directly on the construction site, with marble sourced from the surrounding area. The villa was inhabited until the late 4th century and likely fell victim to destruction during the Gothic Wars around 378 AD. The complex, completely covered by earth, was accidentally discovered in 1964 during construction work for a dam. After archaeological excavations and an initial plan for salvage, it was decided to leave the findings on site and establish a museum. The villa was later reconstructed with EU funds and opened to visitors in 2008.
