Roman City Poŀlèntia-Teatre Romà

The Roman city of Poŀlèntia, of which the theater was a part, was founded around 70 BC, approximately 50 years after the Roman conquest of Mallorca in 123 BC. It developed into the most important Roman settlement in the Balearic Islands and played a central role in the Romanization of the archipelago. The theater itself was built in the 1st century AD outside the then city limits. In the 3rd century AD, Poŀlèntia received a city wall, but this could not prevent its looting and destruction by the Vandals in 426 AD. Systematic excavations of the theater began in the 1950s after an American foundation acquired the land.

The ruins of the Roman Theater of Poŀlèntia are located in Alcúdia on Mallorca, an island in the Spanish Balearic Islands. It is situated at an elevation of approx. 6 m above sea level.

The remains of the Roman city, including the theater, are accessible to visitors. The theater consists of semicircular seating rows, the orchestra, and a rectangular stage. Ten stone seating rows are still visible, most of which were carved into the natural rock. It is believed that the theater could accommodate approximately 2000 people.
