Roman City Poŀlèntia

The Roman City of Poŀlèntia in Mallorca is a significant archaeological excavation site, bearing witness to the Roman past of the Balearic island. As one of the most important Roman settlements in the region, it offers visitors a fascinating insight into ancient life and architecture.
History+
Poŀlèntia was founded around 70 BC, approximately fifty years after the Roman conquest of Mallorca in 123 BC by Consul Quintus Caecilius Metellus Balearicus. For centuries, Poŀlèntia developed into the leading Roman settlement in the province of Balearica and played a central role in the Romanization of the archipelago. The city was strategically located in the northeast of Mallorca, making it an important port of call for ships from Italy and a stopover in the western Mediterranean. Like many Roman colonial cities, Poŀlèntia featured a forum, commercial streets, temples, and a theater. In the 3rd century AD, the city was fortified with a wall, which, however, could not prevent its plundering and destruction by the Vandals in 426 AD. Although the settlement persisted until the Moorish rule in 902 AD, it subsequently fell into oblivion. In the 16th century, the ruins were accidentally rediscovered, and systematic excavations began in the first decades of the 20th century, unearthing numerous artifacts and building remains.
