Roman City Aquincum-Amphitheatre

The history of Aquincum began around the birth of Christ with the Roman conquest of what is now Hungary, then inhabited by the Celtic Eravisci tribe. From 40 AD, the Romans established full control here and built a military camp. Around 89 AD, a legion was stationed here, leading to the development of significant civilian settlements. In 106, Aquincum became the capital of the newly established province of Pannonia Inferior. The later emperor Hadrian served as governor in 107 and had a palace built. In 124, a settlement center north of the camp was granted city rights as a Municipium, equipped with a wall, public baths, and other buildings. In the following years, two amphitheaters were constructed, one for the civilian city and one for the military camp. In 194, the civilian city was elevated to the status of a Colonia. Although Aquincum lost its provincial capital status in 296, it remained important. After 430, Pannonia was ceded to the Huns, but a Roman residual population is still traceable.

The remains of the Roman City Aquincum Amphitheater are located in Budapest, in the Budapest district, in the Közép-Magyarország (Central Hungary) region, Hungary. The site is situated at an elevation of approximately 94 m above sea level.
