The Puente Romano, also known as the “Old Bridge,” is an impressive ancient structure spanning the Guadalquivir River in the Spanish city of Córdoba. It stands as a remarkable testament to Roman engineering and continues to shape the city's appearance today.
History+
The construction of the Puente Romano was undertaken by the Romans after the Battle of Munda in 45 BC. Originally, it was a crucial part of the Via Augusta and featured 16 arches. In the 10th century, the bridge underwent extensive renovations by the Moorish caliphs who resided in Córdoba at the time. Following the Christian Reconquista of Spain, the structure was renovated multiple times over the centuries. A 17th-century monument to the Archangel Raphael adorns the central part of the bridge.
