Rock of Cashel

The history of the Rock of Cashel dates back to the 4th century, when the Eóghanachta clan conquered the rock and developed it into their tribal seat. For centuries, Caiseal, as the place was called in Old Irish, was the significant royal seat of Munster. In the 5th century, Saint Patrick is said to have elevated the fortress to an episcopal see. In the early 10th century, Cormac Mac Cuielleannáin, who was both bishop and teacher, ruled here. Later, the rock fell to the O’Brian clan, and in 977, Brian Boru was crowned King of Munster here. A significant turning point occurred in 1101, when King Muircheartach O'Brian gifted the rock to the Bishop of Limerick. In 1127, Cormac MacCarthaigh became the first Archbishop of Cashel and began construction of the Romanesque Cormac's Chapel. In the 13th century, construction of the large Gothic cathedral began, which was supplemented by a bishop's castle in the 15th century. After a turbulent history and destruction, including by Murrough O'Brien in 1647, the complex was abandoned by the Anglican Church in the 18th century and fell into disrepair after the cathedral's roof was removed in 1749.

The ruins of the Rock of Cashel are located in the town of Cashel in County Tipperary, in the Munster region of Ireland. The complex is situated at an elevation of approx. 123 m above sea level.

Today, the imposing ruin complex of the Rock of Cashel can be visited. Visitors can explore the remains of the cathedral, Cormac's Chapel, and the round tower, and experience the historic atmosphere of this unique place.
