Taucha Castle

A moated castle in Taucha is first mentioned in 979. In 1005, Emperor Henry II gifted the castle and town to the Archdiocese of Magdeburg. In 1170, the Archbishop of Magdeburg granted town rights. In 1220, a castle was built on the present-day "Schlossberg" (Castle Hill) on the walls of the old moated castle. In 1283, Dietrich von Landsberg conquered the town and had the castle destroyed. In 1437, the knight von Haugwitz received the town as a fief. He built a new structure on the foundations of the old castle. In 1533, the castle was damaged by a fire. In 1542, Wilhelm von Haugwitz had a new castle built. In 1819, the castle was demolished due to dilapidation, and a manor house was erected on its walls. From 1820 onwards, the complex was used as a knight's estate owned by the city of Leipzig. In 1945, the estate was expropriated by the communists and later used as an LPG (agricultural cooperative). In May 2000, the "Förderverein Schloss Taucha e.V." (Friends of Taucha Castle Association) was founded, and renovation work began.
