Wiederoda Manor

A rather unknown, but nevertheless quite stately Baroque castle is located in Wiederoda near Wermsdorf. In 1717, a Heinrich von Bünau acquired the Wiederoda manor and had a Baroque castle built on this site. It should be noted that this Heinrich von Bünau is not identical to the Heinrich who resided at Dahlen Castle at that time. The frequent name confusions in the well-known Saxon noble family stem from the fact that, according to a family statute, all male descendants may only bear the first names Günther, Heinrich, or Rudolph. Even today, the von Bünaus largely adhere to this. However, Wiederoda Castle is not a new building, but was built on the foundations of a previously existing Renaissance castle. A remarkably elaborately painted wooden beam ceiling on the upper floor from the 17th century, which was only uncovered around 1990, is noteworthy. In 1764, the property was sold to Johann Georg Müller. This bourgeois family fell out of favor with the farmers due to their feudal manners (adherence to uncommonly practiced corvée services), leading to an open rebellion in 1831. In 1873, the sheep breeder Emil Barth bought the manor, who is also responsible for the construction of the high gatehouse. His initials can still be seen on it today. Through marriage, the ownership changed again. Heinrich Sieber became the new owner in 1922. In 1945, the manor fell under the land reform. The wife of the then owner Sieber was taken to Rügen and later came to the western occupation zone. The castle was used as a home for tuberculosis patients, as a tractor station, and later as a school and home for difficult children. From 2008, the castle will stand empty.
