Stellichte Manor

In the year 1470, Heinrich Behr obtained permission from Duke Otto of Braunschweig-Lüneburg to redeem Stellichte Castle from the Bishop of Verden, who had held it as collateral since 1427. The condition, however, was that he and his heirs should hold it as a fief. "Heinrich Behr then satisfied Bishop Barthold of Verden regarding the collateral sum of 800 Rhenish gold guilders and received the handover and possession of the castle in 1471". Bishop Barthold of Verden saw the actual castle only as a fortress, which he then "considerably" improved and fortified with the already existing strong outer wall, so that he felt strong enough to chastise the neighboring nobles for their frequent robberies and hostile incursions into his land. Under the Behrs, the castle soon underwent various further structural changes and increasingly developed into a manor house.

Dietrich von Behr, a contemporary of Luther, who owned the castle since 1525, rebuilt it, as well as his castles in Hoya and Häuslingen, which, according to his own words, cost him over "ten thousand daler".

Johann Georg Wilhelm Behr, Friedrich's son, who became the sole owner of the estate in 1704 after the death of his brother, demolished the old castle, whose beautiful construction is known from the old Merian engraving, and built a new residential house in the style of old manor houses. While the old castle stood back on the castle grounds, the new house came closer to the moats, which separated it from the forecourt and the farm buildings. Part of the old cellars of the former castle was reused in the new building, the remaining part has been filled in.

Ulrich von Behr, in whose possession the manor house had been since 1876, had it significantly enlarged at the end of the 19th century. His successor, Dr. jur. Ulrich von Behr (owner since 1903) extended the manor house with a beautiful wing extension.

Today, sustainable forestry is practiced on the estate. The manor house and the buildings of the farm complex are inhabited. The entire farm ensemble is a protected monument.

The current lord of the manor maintains the knight's estate with everything that belongs to it, also with the help of state funds, in an exemplary manner, so that one can speak of a jewel for Stellichte here.
