Schwicheldt Manor

The manor house in the center of the village was the seat of the von Schwicheldt family. In 1782, the current manor house was built on the walls of a previous building. Later, the property passed to the von Oberg family until 1843. The Counts of Schwicheldt zu Söder then reacquired it and, after their male line died out, bequeathed it to the Counts of Hardenberg, who reside there to this day.

The origins of the manor house date back to a medieval castle, which was probably built in the 13th century. This castle served to secure the ford over the Innerste river and to protect the surrounding estates. Archaeological excavations have revealed remains of the foundation walls and parts of the former ring wall.

In the 16th century, the castle was converted into a Renaissance palace. During this period, the building received its characteristic gables and the impressive portal. The reconstruction was carried out under the direction of the master builder Cord Mente, who was also responsible for other important buildings in the region.

The current appearance of the manor house is largely due to the Baroque extension in the 18th century. Under the direction of the architect Johann Georg von Schwicheldt, the building was expanded and given its present stately form. The interior was also redesigned and equipped with valuable stucco work and frescoes.

Today, the manor house is privately owned by the Counts of Hardenberg and is inhabited by the family. Parts of the building are occasionally opened to the public for special events, such as concerts or exhibitions. The surrounding park is also accessible to visitors during certain times.

The manor house regularly hosts cultural events that attract visitors from near and far. These include classical concerts, art exhibitions, and readings. The historic ambience of the building provides a unique setting for these events.
