Obermunzig Manor

The development of the village began in what is now Obermunzig. In 1457, there was an outwork there. In the 15th century, a knight's estate developed, around which Munzig emerged as an estate settlement with a 198-hectare block of estate land. In the 16th century, members of the noble family Miltitz, as owners of the knight's estate of the same name, exercised the manorial lordship and with it the upper and hereditary jurisdiction. The old-established knight's estate of Munzig, mentioned in 1696 and 1764, which included Munzig itself as well as Weitzschen and Dreißig near Mochau, belonged to the noble family Ende until the beginning of the 18th century. Afterwards, it was owned by the Kölbel family, then until the beginning of the 19th century by the noble family Schleinitz, and until around 1860 by the noble family Könneritz, who were followed by various bourgeois owners until 1945. In 1945, the owners were dispossessed and expelled by the communists.

The manor house is centrally located in Obermunzig, on a ridge above the Triebisch Valley. The two-story baroque plastered building with a mansard hip roof was built in 1743 on the site of a Renaissance predecessor building mentioned in 1571 and was extended in 1784 and 1822. After the expropriation and dissolution of the knight's estate in 1945, the manor house served as an orphanage. Among others, the daughters of Jutta Gallus, who was convicted of "fleeing the republic," were housed there in 1982/83. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the manor house was given a new purpose as a socio-therapeutic rehabilitation center and dormitory for addicts. The manor house and the outbuildings were extensively renovated until 2001.
