The Ducal Residence in Zeitz+

The residence of Duke Moritz of Saxony-Zeitz was built in 1653 by converting four townhouses.
Architectural Features+
The complex consists of several wings that enclose two courtyards. The main wing, facing the market square, features a richly decorated Baroque facade.
Inside, numerous rooms with original stucco ceilings and wall paintings have been preserved. Particularly noteworthy is the ducal chapel, which extends over two floors and is adorned with impressive frescoes.
Historical Significance+
The residence served as the main seat of the Duchy of Saxony-Zeitz until its dissolution in 1718. It was a center of courtly life and culture in the region.
After the duchy's dissolution, the building was used for various purposes, including as a Prussian government building and a district court.
Current Use and Accessibility+
Today, the former ducal residence houses the Zeitz Museum, which presents the history of the city and the region. Visitors can explore the historic rooms and learn about the life of the dukes.
The museum is open to the public and offers guided tours. Special exhibitions are regularly held in the historic premises.
