Reppiner Castle

Reppiner Burg consists of a keep with a conical roof and metal spire, and an attached archway with a battlement. Inside the tower is a common room with a brick barbecue area. A staircase on the outside leads after a total of 52 steps through the upper floor of the tower to the viewing platform. The battlement above the archway is also accessible.

The structure, in Neo-Romantic and Neo-Gothic style, conveys the impression of a defensive fortification through its battlements and loopholes. However, given its late construction, it never served defensive purposes, but merely as a backdrop.

Georg Christian Friedrich Lisch already assumed that the Reppin peninsula was settled by Slavs and that a Slavic burgwall was located here. This is supported by the location of the wall as well as archaeological finds in the area of the peninsula; for example, former clay pits and waste from brick production are nearby. Even the name can be derived from the Slavic Repin and means as much as turnip land or turnip village, which suggests agricultural use during that time.

Around 1860, Reppin was already a popular excursion destination for Schwerin residents. Even before 1880, the place where the castle later stood was named after Friedrich Wilhelm, a son of Friedrich Franz II. On the occasion of his early death in 1897 due to the capsizing of the torpedo boat he commanded in the North Sea, a monument in the form of a boulder was erected in 1899. The construction of the castle complex took place in 1907 on behalf of the Charitable Society under the motto: "an unfinished castle for an unfinished life" and according to the plans of building director Gustav Hamann, who also designed the observation tower on Kaninchenwerder island. A restaurant built shortly thereafter, as well as a kiosk, have not existed since the 1950s. The observation tower and its surroundings were renovated and restored after the Wende by Zukunftswerkstatt Schwerin e.V.
