Redemptoristenkloster Heiligenstadt

The Redemptorists established their first presence in Heiligenstadt in 1919, which was formalized as St. Klemens House in 1920. The foundation stone for the current St. Klemens Monastery and its associated St. Gerhard Church was laid in 1925. The community primarily focused on parish missions and confessional pastoral care. During the division of Germany, the monastery was directly subordinate to Rome, as cooperation with the West German Cologne Province was no longer feasible.

The monastery is situated in Heilbad Heiligenstadt, a town in the Eichsfeld region of Northern Thuringia, Germany.

The building complex, constructed between 1925 and 1927 according to designs by Adam Weinhag, is presented in the style of Sicilian Baroque with facades made of local shell limestone. It comprises the St. Klemens monastery building, the St. Gerhard monastery and parish church, and a monastery garden. The monastery building houses a significant theological library, spanning multiple floors with two galleries, as well as its own monastery chapel. The original St. Klemens House was used as a retreat center after the completion of the main monastery. As of 2022, six monks and one lay brother resided at the monastery.
