Redemptoristenkloster Bonn

The origins of the monastery date back to the 14th century, when the city of Bonn established a leprosarium with accommodation for lepers at this site, supplemented by a Lazarus Chapel in 1412. With the decline of leprosy, the institution was closed in 1713 and subsequently managed as an estate, whose revenues were used for charitable purposes. In 1868, the Catholic Association of Bonn acquired the property and established an orphanage there by 1872. After World War I, when the orphanage faced financial difficulties, the Redemptorists took over the buildings in 1920. They founded a monastic school with a boarding house and a monastery for the teaching fathers. During the National Socialist era, the school and monastery were dissolved in 1940, and the buildings were used as a teacher training college and later as a military hospital. After 1945, the Redemptorists resumed school and monastic operations.

The monastery is situated in the city of Bonn, located in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The site on Kölnstraße (corner Am Josephinum) is historically known as "Josefshöhe," a place name indicating its elevated position at an old crossroads.

Today, in addition to the school, the monastery houses a retirement home, assisted living facilities, and a youth center. The monastery church of St. Josef an der Höhe, a Neo-Gothic structure built between 1883 and 1887, is colorfully designed and contains, among other treasures, a 16th-century Lazarus statue.
