Redemptoristenkloster Aachen

The Redemptorists established their branch in Aachen in 1859 with the aim of strengthening pastoral care for the working population. On a purchased plot of land at Alfonsstraße and Lothringerstraße, a convent building was erected and occupied in 1862. The associated monastery church, designed by Heinrich Wiethase, was completed in 1865 and consecrated to the order's founder, Alfonso Maria de Liguori. Between 1873 and 1896, the fathers had to leave the monastery due to the Kulturkampf; during this time, the buildings served for the training of young craftsmen. After their return, the Redemptorists resumed their pastoral work, and the church developed into an important place for services and confessions in the city. During World War II, from 1941 to 1945, the monastery was confiscated by the Gestapo and severely damaged by an air raid in 1943. After the war, reconstruction took place, lasting until 1954. In 1985, the Redemptorists decided to give up the branch and handed over the complex to the Diocese of Aachen in 1986. Jesuits used the monastery until 2005 before it was sold and converted into an office complex.

The Redemptorist Monastery is located in the Aachen city region, in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is situated in the urban area of Aachen, at Alfonsstraße 44.

Following its deconsecration and a renovation in line with monument preservation, the former monastery has served as a modern office complex since 2008. The historical building fabric has been preserved, and the U-shaped structure, which once enclosed a monastery garden, now houses various office communities. A newly built glass hall in the former inner courtyard provides access to the office wings.
