Basilica of St. Quirinus

The origins of the site date back to Roman times, when a burial ground and a memorial existed here, remnants of which are visible beneath the current structure. Around 850, a monastery was established on this site, later transformed into a noble canonesses' foundation. The first documented mention of a church dates to 1043. In 1050, the relics of Saint Quirinus, the city's patron saint, were transferred to Neuss, triggering a significant pilgrimage and fostering the community's prosperity. Construction of the present church began on October 9, 1209, as evidenced by a preserved foundation stone. The building's style was influenced by important Cologne churches such as St. Maria im Kapitol. Over the centuries, the Münster was repeatedly damaged by lightning strikes and fires, particularly in 1741, when the Gothic spires were replaced by a Baroque dome. The French Revolution led to its repurposing and the loss of valuable furnishings. In the 20th century, the church also suffered damage, including a fire in 1914 and a bombing raid in 1944. Since 2009, the Münster has held the title of a Basilica minor.
