Propstei Vechelde

The Provostry of Vechelde is one of twelve sub-districts of the Evangelical-Lutheran State Church in Braunschweig. In 2001, it had approximately 23,000 members; by early 2025, the membership is expected to be around 20,000. The Provostry Synod serves as the supreme decision-making body, responsible for electing delegates to the State Synod, approving the budget, and choosing a new provost when the office changes. The term of office for synod members is six years. The spiritual leadership rests with the provost, who also chairs the seven-member Provostry Board. The Provostry of Vechelde comprises 26 parishes, served by 12 pastors across 14 parsonages.

The Provostry of Vechelde is situated in the northwest of the Braunschweig State Church, nestled within the urban triangle of Braunschweig–Peine–Salzgitter. To the north and west, it borders the Evangelical-Lutheran State Church of Hanover, specifically the Gifhorn and Peine church districts. To the south, it adjoins the Provostry of Salzgitter-Lebenstedt, while to the east lies the Provostry of Braunschweig. The town of Vechelde is a railway station on the Hanover–Braunschweig line. The Mittelland Canal runs through the northern part of the provostry, with the Salzgitter branch canal diverging near Wendeburg. The provostry area includes all localities of the municipality of Vechelde, as well as parts of the cities of Peine and Braunschweig and the municipality of Wendeburg. The parishes of the provostry are located in the eastern part of the Peine district and the western part of the city of Braunschweig.

Today, the Provostry of Vechelde functions as an active center of the Evangelical-Lutheran State Church in Braunschweig, fulfilling its spiritual and administrative duties for its affiliated parishes.
