The Hirzenach Provostry, a former Benedictine monastery, significantly shapes the townscape of Hirzenach, a district of Boppard in the Rhein-Lahn region. The preserved monastic buildings form an architectural ensemble of particular charm.
History+
The Hirzenach Provostry was founded around 1110 by the Siegburg Abbey of St. Michael on land that Emperor Henry IV had granted to the Archdiocese of Cologne with the condition that a monastery be established there. Extensive donations in the early period ensured a stable economic foundation. Soon after its founding, construction began on a Romanesque provostry church, which underwent an early Gothic transformation in the 13th century. In the 18th century, it took over the function of the local parish church. In 1802, following occupation by French troops, the monastery was dissolved, and part of its property was auctioned off.
