Propstei Grab

The Propstei Grab was founded on March 25, 1376, by Hilpolt von Stein the Elder and his son Hilpolt, along with their wives. They established the small provostry at an already existing chapel dedicated to the Holy Sepulchre. The property was built for two monks, a provost and a chaplain, who were sent from the mother monastery of Plankstetten. The provostry derived its income from numerous farms, mills, and a fishing water, the “Roßbach”. The protective patronage over the provostry was held by the founding family. By 1552, nine provosts and three chaplains are known by name.

In 1548, the monks retreated to the mother monastery after the Lords of Wolfstein, who held the imperial lordship of Sulzbürg, began to feud with and tax the provostry. Despite protests and the imprisonment of a prior from Plankstetten by the Wolfsteins, who claimed jurisdiction over the small monastery, the provostry ultimately had to be abandoned when Bernhard von Wolfstein introduced the Reformation in the lordship of Sulzbürg. In 1571, a contract was concluded, securing half of the former income for Plankstetten Abbey. The provostry buildings fell into disrepair over time. After the extinction of the Counts of Wolfstein in 1740 and the transfer of their property to the Electorate of Bavaria, Plankstetten attempted to reclaim the remaining income, succeeding only partially. By 1777, the Grab church was in ruins, and Protestant services were held outdoors. With the secularization in 1806, the income of the former provostry passed to the Bavarian state.

The Propstei Grab was situated southeast of Sulzbürg, on the slope of the Schlüpfelberg, towards Mühlhausen. It is located in the Upper Palatinate region of Bavaria, Germany, near the municipality of Neumarkt.

Today, only ruins and remnants of the former Propstei Grab remain. The buildings deteriorated over the centuries, and its original use as a monastic establishment ended with the Reformation and secularization.
